French acoustics research (and common host experience) identifies three failure modes for dinner music: too loud, so guests strain to hear; too identifiable, so guests sing along or comment on track choices; and too absent, so the silence creates self-consciousness. The correct volume is described by French caterers as "le murmure" — the murmur. Loud enough to hear, quiet enough to forget.
