Today's Tip
A French dinner has background music that is genuinely in the background. Not a Spotify algorithm playing whatever arrived. A considered choice of one album or one genre, set at a volume where conversation requires no raising of the voice. When in doubt, the French choose silence over the wrong music.
Try This
Choose your dinner music before your guests arrive, not when they are at the door. Set it at the volume where you cannot identify lyrics from across the room. Play it from the beginning โ not on shuffle. A considered beginning to an album creates mood; random shuffle destroys it.
French acoustics research (and common host experience) identifies three failure modes for dinner music: too loud, so guests strain to hear; too identifiable, so guests sing along or comment on track choices; and too absent, so the silence creates self-consciousness. The correct volume is described by French caterers as "le murmure" โ the murmur. Loud enough to hear, quiet enough to forget. Jazz at this volume is the French default because its melodic density rewards attention without demanding it. The music becomes a texture of the evening rather than a feature of it.
