The French Approach to Color

The French wardrobe works in neutrals because neutrals combine without effort. Navy, white, cream, camel, black, and gray. Within these six, the French build complete wardrobes. Color is used as accent โ€” a silk scarf, a bag, a single piece that exists to animate an otherwise quiet outfit.

Lay out everything in your wardrobe that is not a neutral. Count how many of those pieces you have worn in the past month. If the answer is fewer than half, the color in your wardrobe is aspirational, not functional. The French buy color carefully and wear it constantly โ€” not the other way around.

The French fashion concept of "accord" is the principle that a wardrobe's colors should agree with each other โ€” not match, not clash, but harmonize without effort. This is achieved through the neutral base: when every piece is a neutral, adding any single color creates an accord automatically. The American approach of mixing multiple colors requires active coordination every morning. The French approach makes coordination the default, freeing attention for other things. Fashion should not require daily problem-solving.
