On 1 November, French families put chrysanthemums on graves. The flower is so bound to this that giving one as a gift at any other time reads as morbid.

If you give flowers in France, avoid chrysanthemums entirely, and also carnations. Ask a florist rather than guessing; they will tell you plainly.
