Why the French Do Not Smile at Strangers

An unprompted smile at a stranger in France reads as either a mistake or an approach. It is not coldness: the greeting does the work that a smile does elsewhere.

Substitute a clear bonjour for a smile with strangers for a week. The transaction is warmer, not colder, once the greeting is doing its job.

Nothing again. This is a behavioural adjustment rather than a purchase.
